"I think more experienced players know how many big blinds they have,
and they adjust based on antes, players, and tournament situations. "

This is M  M=   your stack / total of blinds and antes

effective M = M / number of players  (this is for short handed situations)

I suppose I should go buy Harrington's book, but I don't understand
"efective M" if it is what you say it is. It seems to me that effective M
would be a concept that takes into account the fact that the blinds are
going to come around quicker. If that is the case, being heads-up would
seem to suggest a lower "efective M" because you are going to have fewer
hands to wait for a playable hand, compared to, say, 4 remaining players,
where you are going to have many more hands dealt to you between your
blinds. If true, "effective M" should be the reverse of "M/number of
players", and thus effective M should be a higher number with 4 players
than it is with 2.

Can you explain further please? Thanks.

??? M (20) / number of players (5) = 10 ??? The only way I can get this
result is if I'm counting in base 6 and rounding down. Or ragscollector
misstated the formula. Or I'm not understanding what is plainly written.
