The range of tuition sites from a Google search overwhelms me.
Anyone recommend a good site for a 'complete' beginner to learn from? I
played a few nights for 'fun money' on Pacific Poker (first night -$400(!),
second night +$100, third night -$50) and really enjoyed it, but I'd like to
learn the basics from scratch before I risk any real cash.
Cheers.

You should check out www.thepokerscout.com. It has site reviews and stuff like
that, plus a beginners section. I'd recommend somewhere like Absolute Poker,
Pacific Poker, or maybe Poker Stars as good sites for beginners.

If you really want to learn the game go to pokerschool.com and check it
out. For a small monthly fee they have real competition and a lot of
experts who will advise you.

There have been a couple of posts on this. In fact, I think there was
one yesterday that I responded to, but I this is a good question, so I
will recount what I said to them.
If I were a Newbie, knowing what I know now, here is what I would do.
I would go check out and read all the poker books at my local library.
This will give you a good understanding of the game. Then do what you
did and download some poker software and go to town playing the games.
The problem is that play money games tend to be nothing like real money
games. They are either all-in adrenelin fests, or they are too loose to
give you a good sample of whether you would win or lose in the real
world.
IMHO, the best place to learn with play money is in the Pokerstars play
money tourneys, specifically the multi-table SnGs. The people who play
them for the most part are remarkably solid. Why is this? I am not
sure, but they get good crowds and people who try to win. You can even
sell Pokerstars playchips on ebay (against thier rules but they are
there) or auctions.yahoo.com. Just do a search for "pokerstars" on
either of those sites. They only give you 2000 play money chips a day
and they have some buy-ins for 100K. So you need to earn your chips to
get to play these high buy in games. So you won't find many people who
just don't care playing at the higher levels.
If you can work your way up on those toruneys and consistently finish
in the money, you will have a good indicator of real money success.
Another reason they are a good teaching tool is that they have so many
people playing in them that the people who don't take it seriously
usually burn out fairly quickly and you can get a good hour of solid
play.
I would ignore all the ring games (non-tourney games) when starting out
if your goal is to learn poker. They really aren't very valuable, but
as someone said the limit games can be somewhat like the 'no-foldem'
hold em you see at a lot of casinos. The no limit ring games are so
unlike real money NL, stay away.
Once you have built your bankroll and are consitently placing in the
money at these tourneys. Get the no need to deposit, $100 free money
new player account from Party Poker offered from this link:
http://www.instantbankroll.com/ib.asp?rc=GRIMJACK808
The instant bank roll people will give you $75 up front and $25
additional after you have played 500 raked hands. After 500 raked
hands, the money is yours. The only condition is that you have not had
a real money party poker account (or one of its skins like Empire) and
have a US or Canada address. If you are in college and share an
address with roommates, use your home address if someone already has a
party poker account because they limit it to one per address. If you
already have a play money account at party, you still qualify, but you
will need to sign up for a new account with a different e-mail address
to get your money.
In fact, since who knows how long they will keep this offer going, you
might want to get your free money now and learn to play at the play
money tables with this money in the bank since there is no time limit
on you completing the 500 raked hands.
I tell people about this offer, but I don't run it. If you find this
info useful, please consider using my referral ID:GRIMJACK808 during
the sign up process. If you decide not to, the choice is yours, you
lose nothing by doing so, but either way, get the free money. As a
newbie, I didn't know about this offer since people were publishing
their own worse offers rather than this one, so at least consider it.
Good Luck!!
