Summary of My WSOP Play in.
In 2007, I played at the WSOP, Event #27… on a total free roll.
In the circles of local Phoenix home games I play in, every year, we put together a series of Super Satellites leading to a series of Qualifiers which lead to a 15-player final round (www.allegiancerealty.com/wsop.pdf). In 2007 we had 3 $100 Buy IN 40-player Qualifiers with a series of $20Buy IN Super satellites. The top five finishers from each satellite advance to a 15-player final round. The winner of the final round, wins $10k while 4 other places cash for the other $2,000. In the Super Satellites, winners won their $20 buy in back, PLUS got a $100 Tournament Entry Seat to a Qualifier.
In both the second and third $100 Buy In Satellite Qualifiers, I won my tournament entry on a free roll via the $20 Satellite Feeders. For every $120 in prize money, top finisher(s) got their $20 buy in back PLUS a $100 tournament entry seat to either of the three $100 Buy In Qualifiers.
In Q2, after winning my seat and grinding out after 8-hours of play, being second in command in chips, went out in forth place.
Final: When we got down to the final 5 players we agreed to a “chop” whereby 4th and 5th place would each leave with $500. The final three players, agreed to chopping once again. Each player getting $3000 while we would play it out winner take all for the remaining $2000. I was overly tight and getting tired and playing like an idiot. Loosened up and subsequently loosened OUT. After chopping in 3rd Place I decided I would parley my $3000 in winnings into the WSOP Event #27 $1500 NL Hold Em Tourney.
Showed up at the Rio Casino amazon room, which is the size of super Wal Mart. Hundreds and hundred and hundreds of tables. With butterflies in my stomach, I needed to take the edge off and needed a drink. The bartender was kind enough to give a “double shot” for the price of a single of Crown Royal. Went down smooth and settled me down. All the big names were there. Steve Danniman at the table behind me, later in the day Chris Ferguson at the table next to me, Celine Dion’s husband across from me…yada yada yada I could go on forever about all the big names.
There were 2,315 players in the event.
Total prize pool of $3,159,975.
The top 198 finishers cash
The winner of today's event will win $603,069.
First hand I have big slick suited in middle position. I bump it up and get two callers. Flop spikes a King and I bet out a pot bet, blind calls. Turn is garbage, he checks, I bet again, he folds. First hand, win a nice one and within the first half hour win 3 or 4 hands and pretty soon have 5,000 in chips.
About 40 minutes into the tourney, the broke up our table. When I moved to the new table, I could not catch any cards for what seemed like an hour. Getting blinded out, and down to about 4,500 finally a win a hand, a big one, taking out a short stack, and I am sitting on 6,000 in chips. My first victim of the day. Just before the break, I get AK suited. Ohh does it look soo soo good but in early position. I decide to limp in. Button calls, option checks. Flop comes Ace, garbage, garbage, all diamonds. Blind checks, I check, button moves all in. I think I found the flush. We both fold and I dodge a bullet. We break and I am feeling good about my game. Met my first goal, surviving until the first break.
After the break, I don’t catch any cards for about an hour. I think I get K2 or Q4 off suit about six or eight times a piece. I’m down to about 3,500 in chips and finally catch some cards. Flop a flush in the big blind and get paid off dearly. About a half hour later I have AA under the gun. I limp in, everyone folds except the button, he moves all-in, blinds fold, and I call, he has Ace Seven. My next victim, he is gone. Just before the end of the second break, I count my chips, I am at 6,000. Come back from the second break and the ante’s start. The entire round I simply cannot catch any cards. Crapola everytime. In the small blind I have Jack Two suited and limp in. Big blind calls. Flop comes Jack Jack eight. Dream flop. I check, he bets, I call. Turn is King. I check, he bets, I call. River is an Ace. I check, he bets, he shows Jack King and wins the pot. I am down to 2,500 in chips. Half hour later, I have pocket Queens in late position. Under the gun make it 3.5x the big blind. Middle position raises it up even more. I fold my queens. Under the gun goes all in. Insta-call, they both flip over Ace King and the river spikes an Ace, I would have been gone. Good fold!
Get crap again for the next half hour then find pocket Jacks. Early position bets 3X the big blind, I come over the top and move all-in, everyone folds, he shows his Ace and I muck my jacks. A little later under the gun I find pocket Nines. Since we have not seen flops but more or lease blind and ante stealing I decide to limp in. In hopes of catching a set. Button makes a value bet 2X the blind, small blind calls, big blind folds, I call. Flop spikes a nine but two hearts. Blind checks, I check, river checks. Turn is an Ace. Everyone checks. River is garbage. I finally throw out a minimum bet and the other two fold. I muck my set. For about an hour at this table we are constantly playing short handed with 8 to 9 players or have to “pause” play because we only have 7 players. We are in the outer ring and it seems they have forgot about us. I complain to the floor and they fill us back up. For the hour before break three. It is an all in frenzy. I am watching short stackers disappear and monsters come in with 30,000, 40,000, even 50,000 in chips. Finally, made it to the third break. I have 4,900 in chips. Average chip stack is about 16,000.
After the break, they break our table and I find my way back to my original table and in my original seat. How freaky is that? Seated next to me is Nam Lee. A Johnny Juanda type, hyper aggressive. Every player at this table has towers of chips. I am very very short stacked at this table. No one is letting me see a flop when I am in the blinds. I catch nada. Play is very slow and I feel like a house nestled in New York City. Towers everywhere! And I observe piss poor poker being played. Guys moving all in with 30k in chips with middle pair crappy kicker only to lose to top pair with mediocre kicker. The guy next time is from AZ. I tell him how I cant believe guyz are going to war with just a pair and he agrees. What does he do next? He goes to war with Ace Jack versus Ace Queen after both catching an Ace on the flop. He is gone and the queen kicker holds up. I am down to 4,500 in chips. In a rare instance, in the big blind I have Ace Jack suited. Everyone folds except small blind calls. I move all in and he folds. I get back up to 6,000. I find Ace King in early position. I hate Ace King. Against my better judgment I make it 1,500 to go, get one caller, behind me. Eveyone else folds. I miss the flop, but bet out another 1,500 he comes over the top and puts me all in. I fold. I hate Ace King. Thousands in chips are moving from stack to stack and players are dropping like flies all around me. You hear the sound of “player down at table 54”, “player down at table 12” non-stop. For every player we lose, another one comes in with his own mountain of chips.
I survive to the dinner break with 675 in chips. In as much as poker is a game of skill, you all need to get at least some cards. I never thought I was going to just go down by being ante and blinded out. I have to wait 90-minutes only to survive a few more hands. What a bunch of crap! I have dinner and free beer and oversee Eli Elezera and Scotty Nguyen heads up for the 7-Card Stud event. Eli takes it down.
Back from dinner, we are seated and I have only a few hands left before I am completely gone. I have six hands before the big blind hits me ($600) and the ante is $75 and I will be history. There are 420 remaining players. Play is very slow and every hand has action. We lose two players just like that. Next hand, I have pocket Aces. After my ante I only have $525 in chips. I post my chips and the dealer, says, loudly “we have an ALL IN”. I don’t even have a bet equal to the big blind. Everyone folds, including the small blind, he takes $75 back and I win a pot. The ante’s and blinds. Yee Ha! I have about 1600. I get squat on my big blind, after a raise and re-raise, we lose yet another player on my big blind. The tournament monitor says we are down to 290 players. I am sooo close to the money. I cannot believe it. I need to finish 268. Yee Ha! It has been an hour and we have not even played 8 hands. I just want to go home. In the small blind, I have Queen Five, spades. No pre-flop action, just one limper. The big blind was playing super tight and I thought this would be my chance to at least see a flop, I decided this is the hand. This is it. I limp in and get a dream flop, King, Nine, Three, all spades. I flopped a Queen high flush. Yee Ha! I move all in for my last 375 chips. They both call and check me down. Turn is a three. River is a three. Dealer says to flip em over. I show my Queen high flush, the big blind mucks and the limper has a wired pair of sevens, I am gone, he has three’s filled with sevens, full house. I think I finished somewhere between 275 and 285th place.
I watched some pi.ss poor poker being played and the next time I go, I am pretty certain I will cash. Hard to be believe that I never got above 6,000 in chips for the whole day and finished in the top 10 percent, just outside the money.
