It's very well done. Much better commentary than the WPT shows (the cheese
factor is a lot lower), and the production values are a big step up.

One thing I love is that you can actually hear the players talk, as
opposed to the commentators trying to talk over them. What would you
rather hear, the table talk or the insight of VVP or Sexton?

And there's none of those jarring sound breaks the WPT has, when they edit
it comments that were obviously taped at different times and different
places. It got a little better as the season went on, but those first few
were really painful to listen to (at least to anyone with an ear for such
things).

It's probably a matter of taste, but I think the WPT production is far
superior to ESPN. I don't see how you can compare the commentary on ESPN as
being better than WPT. Those ESPN announcers are horrible. Sexton is far
superior to any other announcer and as for VVP, well, you either like him or
you don't, no middle ground there.

*The* key difference is the one you describe: ESPN gives much more air time
to the players at the table. If WPT would do this to the extent that ESPN
does, then WPT would be the complete package.

WPT is more staged, the players are dressed better and act more
politely. I think it could appeal to a wider audience than the ESPN
coverage. The ESPN coverage is more of a documentary style which may
well appeal more to players who've actually spent time in the card
rooms.

In order to do this they would have to get rid of Linda Johnson
barking to the audience about what is on the flop, turn etc. They
don't really need that excess commentary about the hands anyway. The
only reason it's there is for the studio audience, and if the monitors
are set up properly they don't need it.

ESPN does some things I would like to see the WPT do. Start with nine
players, don't show every folded hand, get rid of the annoying
pop-ups, and that stupid white strip of plastic on the table, and a
few other things.
