So, is this a paid position? If so, how much?

No.  This is a public beta test.  There may be some swag that we won't mention
on a newsgroup.  You get to play and offer input, and tell your friends you were
a beta tester for a fine product.

I'm wondering why their beta testers have to have broadband. There are
still many people using dialup for one reason or another, and I would
think they'd want to test their software in that area, too. Why work
on just pleasing those with a high-speed connection?

Like I said, you don't need to run the active x control if you'd rather input
your machine specs by hand.  Its an optional tool to tell us exactly what your
machine specs are.  We've run many beta tests for all kinds of software and some
people use it, some don't.  Many people do not know the name of their video card
or how much ram they have, or the exact speed of their processors.  There's even
a little subculture that shows up in beta tests that enjoy this kind of sneek
peek.  We are looking for video game players in addition for that reason.  I'll
turn off the anonymous posting now as well, I didn't realize that was clicked.
Anyway, no obligation.  Only apply if you want ;-).

This is the response I expected from you. However, I think it's a pretty
stupid way to get people to beta test because I won't do it, and I doubt few
will.

Would you open something I asked you to open?

The program is just to get your machine specs.  You could actually do it by hand
if you wish.  It is safe, but I understand your apprehension.

My company is recruiting for a beta test and thought some of you guys might be
interested.

Here are the details:

We are currently recruiting for a beta test team. This team will get a sneak
preview of PKR (pkr.com) and can contribute valuable feedback and suggestions.
PKR offers an engaging poker experience that puts players at the heart of the
action.  With its richly rendered 3D environments, fully customizable
characters, and emphasis on human interaction, PKR puts the soul into online
poker. But it's not just about graphics and interaction as PKR also offers all
the poker features that you'll find anywhere else plus a few more besides.

Candidates for the beta test must:

   1. Be 18 years of age or older

   2. Have a PC with at least 1 GHz CPU and 256 RAM

   3. Have a broadband connection

If interested in joining our team please visit http://betatest.ibeta.com/PKR and
complete the submission form. If you fit the team's needs, we will be in contact
with you shortly in order to verify information and set you up on the team.

Thank you for your interest!!

OK, being the puter genius that I am, it is asking me to open a program. Is
this safe to do?

It says

"During signup you will be prompted to open and run a small program.
This program enables our site to collect your computer system information
for submission.
This information will help us in determining your eligibility.
All information collected will be visible to you prior to submission."
