THE WORLD COMES TO POKERSTARS TO BECOME MONEYMAKERS
The Second Annual World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), and the
first after the startling win at this year’s WSOP by PokerStars own Chris
Moneymaker, has brought throngs of players to PokerStars.com looking to
duplicate Chris’ feat of turning a very little into a whole lot.
With over $150,000 in free entries in this year’s WCOOP, all those players
have come to the right place.
The eleven events have a total guaranteed prize pool of $1,000,000.
Many players will become moneymakers this year on PokerStars.com.
Event #1 of this year’s WCOOP is the unique Heads Up No Limit Holdem.
With entries limited to 512, the eventual winner ONLY has to win NINE
straight heads up matches to claim 1st place. Someone has to do this
miraculous feat and someone will. Although they will probably need a
little luck along the way.
It’s not just heads up, it’s heads up No Limit Holdem, which means the
pressure never lets up for even one hand.
Usually these reports cover the Final Table only, but since this is a one
on one event, the last three confrontations are detailed.
It's taken over eight and a half hour to pare the field from the beginning
512 to 4. We'll cover one table, with the winner going to the finals, then
the other semi-final table. Lastly, the report covers the battle for 1st
place.
Nibbling vs. Gunslinger3
No more accurate names could be found for these two. Nibbling is a
grinder. He wants to win a lot of little pots and avoid firefights.
Gunslinger3 is just the opposite. He wants to start firefights and be the
last man standing. The 'Gun' is also the only player left of the five WSOP
qualifiers from PokerStars.com who entered this event. In fact he was the
only one of those five to make it into the money.
Both gentlemen start with 192,000 in chips. The blinds are 1,280 and
2,560. No Limit. In heads up play, the button is the small blind and has
to act first. This rule never fails to disconcert players who aren't used
to heads up play. It's a strong tell for experienced players that their
opponent hasn't won many tournaments and may not know how poor a starting
hand can be to raise heads up.
Normally a player as aggressive at Gunslinger3 would have a big in heads
up No Limit, but Nibbling is a master at trapping aggressive players. This
is a classic 'boxer versus slugger' confrontation.
Most hands in these games go uncontested. Someone raises the big blind and
that ends the hand, as there usually isn't a call, for the big blind would
be giving up position to the button after the flop.
Not surprisingly, Gunslinger3 took the early lead with when he came over
the top of a Nibbling bet on the turn in hand #5. Nibbling let his cards
go.
Gun kept the pressure on each hand Nib and it looked like this was going
to be a walkover for Gunslinger. In the first ten minutes, Gun had moved
to a 3-1 chip lead with consistent pre-flop raising and post-flop betting.
But in hand 24, Nibbling got a chance to stand up to the bully when the
Gun couldn't call Nibs bet on the turn. As usually, the PokerStars
audience didn't get to see any cards as there are so few showdowns in this
game.
But a showed down Queen high straight by Nibbling a few minutes later
started to turn the momentum away from Gunslinger3.
When the blinds went up after 15 minutes of play, Gun still had a 3-2 chip
lead.
But the boxer, Nibbling, picked up pocket Aces in hand #40 and clobbered
the puncher, Gunslinger3, over the head with them all-in. Nibbling took a
$240k pot with Aces and 9's. Gunslinger3 had represented a hand on the
river with a 60k bet that Nibbling was delighted to call all-in.
Gunslinger3 had K J and only the 9's on the board.
Suddenly it was Nibbling with the 3-2 chip lead.
But the Gun had plenty of bullets left and fought back to even with Kings
up in hand 45. Nibbling mucked his hand in the showdown.
Right at the half hour mark the fellas were on a 100+ hand an hour pace
when lightning struck. On Hand #53 Gunslinger3 may have made a misread or
maybe he just thought he had the best hand.
In any case after winning seven straight matches each, one player had to
lose. This is how Gunslinger3's feet were shot out from under him.
Nibbling had a slight chip lead, 200k to 180k, which is vital in No Limit
because your opponent can't bust you.
Gun was on the button and first to act. He doubled Nibbling's 3,840 big
blind. Nibbling reraised another 23k in chips. Gunslinger3 might have
heard alarm bells at this point, because Nibbling isn't aggressive
pre-flop. But the Gun wasn't listening and it cost him. He flat called the
23,000 with the 9 7 of Spades.
The flop came a nightmare for the Gunslinger3 because it was an up and
down straight draw. Just enough to cold deck him. And it came a daydream
for Nibbling, because he flopped top pair and a second nut flush draw with
the K 5 of Hearts.
*** FLOP *** [8h 6h Ks]
Nibbling is first to act and bets a perfect amount to keep Gunslinger3 in
the hand--38,400.
Gunslinger3 feels he has to take one off for that price and calls 38,400.
*** TURN *** [8h 6h Ks] [9c]
Nibbling doesn't want to see another straightener and bets 130,560 all-in.
Gunslinger3 now has a pair with his straight draw and calls off all his
107,520 in chips.
*** RIVER *** [8h 6h Ks 9c] [2s]
The river misses both players, but the singles hitter beat the home run
slugger with a pair of Kings and goes on to the Finals against one of
these guys:
spxdes vs. batoelrob
"Hurry up, I have to go to work," spxdes kept saying.
It was 4:30 a.m. in Portugal where spxdes lives when this match started.
He must get paid a lot per day to not call in sick for a shot at the
$12,800 first prize.
"I want a $100 refund." Now we know spxdes is joking because he's already
guaranteed at least $3,560 for 4th. All the railbirds were willing to take
the extra cash off his hands.
This match started at the same time as Nibbling vs. Gunslinger3. Equally,
these players had the same blinds and 192,000 in chips as well.
spxdes seemed to be serious, though, about needing to leave and got off to
a fast start with pocket Aces on the second hand. With two pair on board,
however, it was too scary to make much money. A little later when the
super aggressive batoelrob tried to buy a pot with fourth pair on the
river, spxdes took a healthy 5-3 chip lead by flat calling with top pair.
The hopes of spxdes to get to work on time with a quick decision would be
dashed, though.
Keeping the pedal to the floor for the first twenty minutes, spxdex was up
to almost 3-1 in chips before the 'bat' swooped in. Unlike Gunslinger3 who
won an entry on PokerStars.com, batoelrob played in the WSOP this year on
his own nickel. He's a top international player from Holland.
These two were even faster than the other two, playing at a 120 hand an
hour pace. But again, there are few contested hands in this format.
Hand #40 was contested and it reversed batoelrob and spxdes's positions.
spxdes limped in from the button with 5 3 off. batoelrob with 9 5 off.
Both guys used a seven on the turn for a straight, but spxdes didn't know
that batoelrob's was the higher straight with a flush redraw yet. The
flush rob got on the river he didn't need. He was already there all-in and
was doubled up.
If batoelrob thought spxdes would give up and leave for work, he was
mistaken. With Ace up, spxdes got even quickly after his baby straight
disaster.
Then however the overwhelming aggressiveness of batoelrob started to have
an effect as spxdes's cards went dead. At the end of the second 15 minute
level, rob had spx 2-1.
The chip lead was now 5-1 for batoelrob when spxdes went to the river with
a pair of 4's and won Hand #70
It wasn't until Hand #104 almost an hour into the match that spxdex was
able to get out from under batoelrob's thumb. A few successful all-ins
helped spxdes's morale. But he was being bullied unmercifully on most
hands. Taking a stand all-in with a lowly pair of 3's, spxdes said "needed
that" when the threes held up against batoelrob's A K off. Now spxdes was
back in the ballgame with 170k to 215k for batoelrob.
Amazingly, after being dominated for most of the hour, spxdes actually
took the lead on Hand #109. He reraised batoelrob all-in pre-flop an rob
couldn't call.
He could start the car, though, because he was going to be able to go to
work soon thereafter.
"Yikes," spxdes said as batoelrob showed him a 106,000 chip all-in six
high bluff. With 8 8 7 5 3 on the board, it was logical to spxdes that rob
probably had something for such a huge all-in bet. But he was wrong.
Now back to being a 1-2 chip dog after all his heroism, spxdes might be
forgiven for being a little on tilt from the shown bluff.
Fifty seven minute into this match on Hand 128 it was over, spxdex could
finally go to work. He limps in again just calling the big blind from the
small for 6,400 with pocket 4's. In the big blind, batoelrob had the 7 4
of Hearts.
*** FLOP *** [Qc 5s 7s]
With a pair of 7's on the flop batoelrob bets 12,800 and is called by
spxdes.
*** TURN *** [Qc 5s 7s] [Td]
A check from batoelrob. A 12,800 bet from spxdes and a call from batoelrob.
*** RIVER *** [Qc 5s 7s Td] [2d]
Another check by batoelrob probably made spxdes think his 4's were good.
Why not? He goes all-in for 72,960 and somehow batoelrob knows his third
pair with an underkicker is good and calls.
Have a nice day at work, spxdes, you earned a day off.
CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
batoelrob vs. Nibbling
College Basketball fans know how hard it is for even powerhouses to win
the NCAA. And they only have to win six straight games. These two
gentlemen have already won EIGHT straight games and must win one more for
the title.
Nibbling is used to players who swing from their heels like batoelrob.
He's handled several of them already.
On the other hand, batoelrob knows that Nibbling doesn't like to call big
bets. So that's what rob's going to give him…big bets.
With unrelenting pressure early, batoelrob moved out to a 5-4 chip lead
when in Hand #22 he got the chance to give Nibbling the ultimate big bet,
a 400,000 all-in. That was too rich for Nibbling's blood.
Two hands later, it worked so well, batoelrob did it again. Almost 500,000
this time. Now rob leading by better than 2-1 and the school yard bully's
riding high.
Once he found the winning formula, batoelrob kept using it. The all-in
kept getting bigger and bigger because Nibbling couldn't call any of them.
On Hand #47 Nibbling tried a new tack. He check raised batoelrob on the
flop of Qs Ts 5h and was promptly reraised all-in. So much for that idea!
It wasn't until Hand 56 that Nibbling was finally able to call one of
batoelrob's repeated all-ins. He only had 72,000 left so when he was
reraised pre-flop, Nibbling called. It was a good thing for Nibbling that
he was reraised because he never could have called a Jc 8d 6h flop with
his Ks Th. But all-in Nibbling couldn't fold and he caught perfect perfect
for a straight against a pocket pair of 3's for batoelrob.
That win only got Nibbling up to a 1-3 chip dog, though. Pounding him over
and over with giant bets that Nibbling couldn't find a way to call, the
end finally arrived for the marathon WCOOP #1.
As a 5-1 chip dog on Hand 80, the last hand, Nibbling thought he might be
live with A 10 off and a trip 9 flop. He was. He had two overcards to
batoelrob's 8 3 of Clubs.
But Nibbling said "Done" after an 8 came on the turn and he'd called
batolrob's umpteenth all-in of the match. No help arrived on the river.
That's why the home run hitters make the big bucks.
