CAN AMERICANS STILL PLAY STUD?
WCOOP #5 7-CARD STUD
August 11, 2003
285 players
Total Prize Pool: $85,500
One of the many wonderful things about the Internet is that there are no
national boundaries in cyberspace.
It’s just a question that comes to mind when seeing today’s Final Table.
Although more than half of the entries in today’s Stud tournament were
U.S. based, only one American made the final eight. And only six out of 24
made it into the money. Seven Americans, counting a Canadian.
We used to say at the World Series that a player that arrived in a $2
million plane was probably better than one who arrived in a $2,000 car.
Here, travel expenses aren’t a qualifier. Most people play from home.
With the explosion of interest in poker over the last 30 years, Texas
Holdem has replaced Stud, Lowball and Draw poker as the national game in
the U.S. Have Americans forgotten how to play Stud? Should it matter to
the poker world if they have?
When fonzalari (las vegas) went out 9th, it was literally naya (san
antonio) against the world.
FINAL TABLE: 30 min. levels. 500 ante, 1,000 bring-in, playing 3k/6k
Seat 1: xenia (vienna) (26,162 in chips)
Seat 2: naya (san antonio) (259,697 in chips)
Seat 3: omega100 (frankfurt) (44,296 in chips)
Seat 4: oldnicky (völklingen) (48,295 in chips)
Seat 5: risky (Hants) (17,077 in chips)
Seat 6: Sassenage (Schauenburg) (101,289 in chips)
Seat 7: Marco Trevix (Mestre-Venezia) (153,159 in chips)
Seat 8: RARO (Auckland) (62,525 in chips)
Marco Trevix said, "gl to evryone except naya :)))"
It doesn’t take long for one of the Europeans to single out the only
American (and the substantial chip leader) at the table. Was he really
joking? Am I? Usually, yes.
After nearly eight hours of play, the Final Table is formed and ready for
action.
Only ‘risky’, with less than three big bets, starts out in any danger.
On the seventh hand we have our first showdown.

Although it was in fact ‘risky’ for risky, at least it was short. As the
Italian, with pocket 4’s catches a third 4 on 5th street to crack risky’s
split Queens all-in.
Seven handed chip count.
Seat 1: xenia (30,662 in chips)
Seat 2: naya (257,197 in chips)
Seat 3: omega100 (52,796 in chips)
Seat 4: oldnicky (40,795 in chips)
Seat 6: Sassenage (97,789 in chips)
Seat 7: Marco Trevix (187,236 in chips)
Seat 8: RARO (46,025 in chips)
With five big bets, xenia is the new low. But with the extra betting round
in stud, five bets could disappear in one hand.
Instead, for the next quarter hour it’s very quiet.
ixcuix [observer] said, "I want to see someone reraise when an ace raises."
deusyali [observer] said, "I want to see a hand that goes to 4th street"
When Sassenage wins a pot, naya keeps saying “sassy.” Is there a personal
confrontation in our future? A lot of questions today, any answers?
naya said, "sassy"
We’re playing higher now, getting it out of the dirt. 500 ante, 1,000 low,
playing 4k/8k.
The 4k/8k chip count, with xenia joined by omega100 and oldnicky on the
endangered species list of five big bets or less each.

Seat 2: naya (219,172 in chips)

With three clubs, xenia took a shot and was clubbed on sixth street by

The six handed chip count.

low is omega100. Is he next?
At 41 hands, we won’t know about omega100 for a little while, but we do
know that the level went up and we have a new chip leader. And that
oldnicky is hanging on by a thread.

As the
Italian, with pocket 4’s catches a third 4 on 5th street to crack risky’s
split Queens all-in.

in stud, five bets could disappear in one hand.
