OK, somehow I screwed up I guess. I have been saving WSOP episodes on my
TiVo and now you're telling me that this was episode 6, but I only have 5.
What did I miss. I have day 1, 2, 3, 4 episodes, and then day 5 (final
table, down to 6 at the end) from Tuesday. Did they split another day?
Damn ESPN for not putting accurate episode information in the program
guide...

Off the top of my head:
Episode 1: Varkonyi, Brunson, Scotty Nguyen
Episode 2: Hellmuth, Grizzle
Episode 3: Lederer, Chan, Moneymaker, Darden
Episode 4: Lederer, Ivey, Scotty N playing together, Moneymaker knocks
out Brenes w/ 88
Episode 5: Start with Hellmuth knocked out, end with Ivey getting
knocked out
Episode 6: 3 or so get knocked out from final table

Well,
ESPN and Travel channel got me interested in giving you guys some of my
money. (Only a loan)
That and Richard Lederer.
I really like hte coverage but some of the issues of inconsistency do bother
me quite a bit. I don't care much if a 77.2 is rounded up rather tahn down
but if, as russ has said, they are cutting stare downs from hand A into
coverage of hand B that is a little more bothersome.
Could you imagine if ABC inserted a play from the 1st quarter of a football
game into the 4th quarter?
Keep up the good work. And thanks for being a PR flak for poker on TV!

Don't you mean the richer Lederer? His first name is Howard.

Yep ... they split the final day, into two shows ... really sucked IMO.
Now, we got to wait a week for the next one.
LOL ... maybe ESPN are poker players AFTER all ... as it seems they've
managed the fine art of ... the Suck out ....
;o)
to get the MAX high ratings for their shows.

Doesn't really matter so much Matt anymore. Like most Suck out artists, you
weakened your winning hand there from a win to a loss ... when you dragged
it out and thus let The Travel Channel Best you ... when two weeks ago, they
started running commercials on The Travel Channel during the WPT ... with
the Winner of the World Series of Poker, promoting the Online Poker site
that he won his entry into the WSOP from.
In other words, many people like myself already know who the winner of the
WSOP is/was, who might not otherwise of known. By the time ESPN decides to
run the final hour, almost everyone who is into Poker, who didn't know
before, will most likely know who won the event, without watching it on
ESPN.
In other words, ESPN has slow played their pre-flop bullet Pocket Aces into
nothing or next to nothing.
Dave L

I disagree. Most people already knew who won. It was in the "real" news,
and he had already been on Letterman, leno, good morning america, today,
etc... His face was EVERYWHERE right after the win. In fact, his letterman
repeat has already aired at least once. People who weren't into poker
didn't notice, because they didn't care. Just as people not into poker not
wont notice or care about the ESPN commercials.
If you want, I can tell you who won the first event of the new WPT, as can
probably 1000 other RGP readers. Whenever events are taped, the info is out
there. I know who goes out when in the WSOP, some of the upcoming hands,
and whatnot, but I'm still gonna watch, because they WAY they play is just
as interesting to me as the final results. In fact, I watch the same shows
over and over, as I am sure many people here also do. It's a good learning
tool and the games, even those I may have seen 10 times, STILL hold my
interest.

Well, I'm sure that there were a LOT of us who did NOT know, and it's the
mystery of it all that adds to it as well, as one watches.
BTW ... one shouldn't ASSUME (and think about the word Ass - U - Me and what
it can mean) that everyone watching the shows, be it WPT or WSOP already
knows the outcome, as I sure didn't for the WSOP, nor the first time I
watched the WPT shows either.
I don't watch Letterman (I don't watch Leno either ... I was a Johnny Carson
fan, but Leno is No Carson) as well ... he's very stale, and IMO I think he
just does his show these days to show up the collect his paycheck and
nothing more ... and I only got into poker about 8 or 9 weeks ago via WPT on
The Travel Channel, only started playing myself, 5 or 6 weeks ago.
Many of us NEWBIES to Poker who I suspect, are the ones boosting the ratings
for the WPT and WSOP shows, did NOT know, and didn't/don't need to have it
waved in our faces either.
As for the next one, how could you know who it is, when from what I
understand, the WSOP for 2004 won't even be held, until March or May (I
forget which) of 2004, and the (new) WPT matches/Tourney's ... are just now
gearing up in the next few months to be run, and thus filmed?

They have already held, and filmed, the first WPT event for the 2nd season.

Calm down there, Debbie, I wasn't flaming with you, just disagreeing with
you and citing examples. The fact is, the travel channel did not, by any
means "outscoop" ESPN by showing Chris Moneymaker winning. It has been a
well-publicized event for a long time. The reason why you didn't notice it
then, but do now, is because you were not then interested in poker, and when
you did hear about it, paid it no attention. Now that you are more aware of
the poker community, hearing the winner finally clicked with you.
If you ask a non-sports fan who won the MLB World Series last year, they
may have no clue. But lets say you start getting into baseball all of a
sudden, and start watching last year's re-runs on sportschannel. Its new to
you. Its great. Then, you flick on ESPN and there is a commercial about
the "World Series Champion Angels" upcoming game.. This may be the first
time YOU heard it, but its been in the news for ages, you just always tuned
it out prior to this. Travel Channel is hardly scooping the story. You are
just paying attention to it for the first time.
You don't watch letterman or leno, fine. But what about watch the news,
read a newspaper, watch ANY morning show (today, GMA, The Morning Show,
etc), read a newsgroup!! (Moneymaker's name has been mention about 1000
times on this forum alone.do a search, his winning has been mention MANY
times in the past week, past 2 weeks, past month, etc. If anything, the ad
is a boon for ESPN, as a lot of Travel Channel newbies probably never even
heard of the WSOP. They probably only know the less prestigious WPT. Now,
they may try to find out what channel it's on to watch it. It's pre-assumed
knowledge. Heck, you can see Moneymaker's picture everytime the show the
wall of winners. It's hardly a secret. Just because you are delightfully
oblivious to your surroundings doesnt mean that people are going to go out
of their way to tiptoe around you.
In the very first WSOP show this year, they mentioned last year's winner
Robert Virkonyi. Did that ruin anything for you? You can still catch the
showing of the FT on reruns quite often. (I don't wanna ruin it for you, but
Phil Helmuth gets his head shaved when he loses a prop bet.ooops! )
In fact, I can tell you that in the first tournament of the upcoming WPT
season, the most interesting hand, and, in fact, most likely the turning
point of the entire tournament, won't even be show on TV, because it
happened right before the final table of 6. Because it won't make TV, most
people will never know how much this one hand effected the whole outcome of
the show. Wanna know about it? Cause you'll never see it on TV.
Wanna know who comes in 2nd place? ;) Wanna know why people don't like
Dutch Boyd? Wanna know the Hand that wins it for MM? It's all information
that is common knowledge. Don't get upset because you are late arriving to
the party.

Douglas,
I am posting the archives from a few different threads regarding the first
WPT event of the new year. Dan N was the Chip leader for most of day 2.
First, here is how he got there... I will preclude it with some of Mike
Sexton's commentary, then follow it up with Daniel N's Post. Immediately
following, I'll post the rundown of what happened right before the final
table was finalized. The post also contains the eventual winner of the
tournament, so read at your own risk.
MIKE SEXTON COMMENTARY:
Another hand: With 20 players remaining in the tournament, here was
another amazing hand (and by far the biggest pot of the tournament so
far). Blinds were 600/1200. Daniel Negreanu brought it in for 3000 and
got called by two players - one an online qualifier from Ladbrokes who had
a lot of chips but who like Chris Moneymaker had never played in a 'live'
tournament, and the other was Dan Alspach, who was in the Small Blind.
Flop was Q-7-4 with two spades. Dan A. checked, Dan N. bet 6000, and both
players called. Fourth street brought the six of clubs (making two spades
and two clubs on the board). Dan A. now leads out for 6000, Dan N. raises
it up to 18,000, and both players called again! The Queen of hearts is
the river card (making the board Q-7-4-6-Q) and Dan A. moves all-in for
16,500. Dan N. calls him and so does the guy from Ladbrokes. Dan A.
turns over the K-Q of clubs (giving him three Queens), Dan N. turns over
two sixes (giving him sixes full), and the online guy turns over two fours
(giving him fours full). Daniel N. wins a monster pot!
When Dan A. went all-in at the river, Dan N. had about 40K left (after he
called) and the other guy had about 20K left (after he called). Daniel
was happy to have won this pot (which he couldn't have won had either
player played the flop differently), but Daniel is always thinking about
what he could have done better. He quickly came over to me and said,
"Great pot. I got lucky there but I probably made a mistake. I should
have moved all-in at the river (instead of just calling Dan A's bet). I
think I would have picked up the other guy's last 20K also."

The higher they go, the harder they fall...
MIKE SEXTON COMMENTARY:
Play has ended on Day 3 for the WPT event in Paris. And what a day it
was. When play reached seven players, they played for nearly five hours
before Daniel Negreanu was eliminated in 7th position. (And Daniel was
the chip leader for at least four hours out of those five with 7 players
left.) This was far and away the longest TV "bubble" battle in WPT
history as only six players make the TV show.
Here are the standings going into tomorrow's final:
NAME CHIP COUNT SEAT #
1) David Benyamine (FR) 366,600 3

That is correct. The final board read:
David 10h-10d
Me 7d-4d
7h-6h-2d.... 4h.... 10s
The pot was a grand total of $353500
I was the chip leader going into the hand, and after the hand my
stack was down to approximately $60,000. For the details, you'll have
to wait for the column:-)

Dave:
Thanks! That was interesting. I guess I missed those posts the first time
around--hadn't seen them before.
Three comments:
- Question for the experts: should Dan A have played faster on the flop
(not just in retrospect, but having top pair/overcard kicker)?
- When you say "Mike Sexton Commentary," I'm assuming you mean he posts(ed)
here? If it hasn't been on TV (indeed, "won't" be on TV), I'm not sure how
else to interpret this.
- I'm not about to get my undies in a twist either way, but I'm surprised
you turned around on the "spoilers" issue. Insofar as tournament poker is a
sport vice a show (notwithstanding some comments about ESPN jacking with
WSOP hand orders, etc.), the comparison to Babylon 5 is flawed. If Debbie
in Ohio doesn't want to read about last week's NFL game, including scores
and eventual winner, she needs to stay away from rec.football (or at least
be *very* selective about what she does read). Same logic applies to
already-played poker tournaments and rgp.

Yep, that's what i meant.

Didn't think i did turn around on the spoilers issue, but I put spoiler in
the reply in case people don't want to know who the winner was before it
aired, as it isn't "common knowledge." Moneymaker winning the WSOP I don't
think will surprise anyone (except Debbie ;)), so I wouldnt bother labelling
that a spoiler.
