Its the luckiest card in the deck. I've never heard the explanation why.
Anyone know?

Well I do not know about it being lucky. In fact Wild Bill Hickock would
consider it just the oposite. He was Holding Ace's and Eight's and the 9 of
Diamonds when he was tragically shot at the Number 10 saloon in Deadwood
South Dakota by Jack McCall. I would consider that an omen!

it's also debated that the kicker was a 5d, Ks or Qc

There's some debate as to what the fifth card was in Wild Bill's hand. I
believe the historical society in Deadwood and the Number Ten Saloon have
differing versions, and I don't think anyone really knows for sure whether
it was the nine of diamonds or some other card. So the poker world's taken
poetic license with it, and any pair of aces and any pair of eights, along
with any other side card is called a "Dead Man's Hand."

Because fish need "knowledge" like that to cling to to keep them playing.

What suit was the 9 that rivered for Jesus' A9 to beat TJ's AQ in 2000?

To answer the posted question, take a look at the Official Dictionary
of Poker, from which one might conclude that the card is unlucky.
(Other responders in this thread take off on the Dead Man's Hand
tangent.)

Other speculation exists on where the name Scourge of Scotland
derives, but all agree that it is the 9D. What I cited is the most
common derivation. You can Google other explanations.

Don't know anything about the 9d being lucky, but it "is called the
Curse of Scotland, because every ninth Scottish king was (supposedly)
a tyrant, and diamonds were a symbol of Scotland."

Taken from a article written by Michael Cappelletti called "The Curse
of Scotland", in Cardplayer Magazine, March 28, 2003. Michael
Cappelletti credits this info to Michael Wiesenberg's "Poker Talk: A
Complete Guide to the Vocabulary of Poker"

Same reason the 7 seat is always the luckiest at the table. I thought
everybody knew that.
