View Full Version : GCA "Lowball Question" Theory

The game is California lowball, A-5 with a joker. The game is showdown. Which
is a favorite and why?
If "I" gave you a Pat 9 and "I" chose a drawing hand, who would be the favorite
and why? This is showdown poker. $100 a hand side bet. Who will end up with the
money? Please don't bother asking stupid questions as to what hand I would draw
to or what Pat 9 I would give you. Just answer the question I asked, if you are
able?

I think your draw would be 22:20 favorite. You with the Jo234K, Pat with
a 95432.

Take away the bug, and increase the odds of the draw hitting a pair, and it
changes. Say 97654 v A234K and the odds favor the made 9.

Problem here is the deck contains 53 cards, while yours contain 52.

Yeah, 22:21. But the deal is "I" would be the favorite since he could
pick the hands to go either way. Ta da.

Wrong, moron. The favorite depends on what cards are left in the deck,
which will change, depending on what the two hands hold. Maybe this is
getting a little too complex for you. In the example I gave, you're drawing
to 17 outs, out of 43 unknown cards to win, making the made 9 the favorite.
If the hands were 9A234 v 5678K, you'd be drawing to 13 outs, out of 43.
Both these cases make the one card draw a dog to a made 9. However, A2389 v
A23JoK, you'd draw to 22 outs out of 43, making you just a slight favorite.
So, I'd win the $100 most of the time betting against the 1 card draw.
Now go and prove your action flop theory, or is the math too tough?

Actually he's right.
Rude, but right.
The question specified that "I" (meaning him) chose the hands.
He would therefore choose the two hands that fit the definition while
offering himself the best odds.
There is no "It depends", he's going to rig it to his advantage.

Okay, I should probably stay the hell out of this, but if you read the
original question, Russ said that he selects a made 9 hand, and he
selects a draw hand. Not a random 9 vs. a random draw. So he can
select the 22:21 hand pair and be the favorite to win. Of course, he
wouldn't make money very quickly :)
You could also argue that since Russ is self-described as an
accomplished cheater at cards, and he's selecting these hands, he
might have "selected" his draw card as well, so the probability that
he'll win is 1.0. Either way, if someone offers you a bet like this,
they have an edge in mind even if you can't see it, so the most likely
outcome is that they'll end up with the money.
This is also true of any solicitation offering you some sort of
insurance (on your mortgage, your credit card balance or anything
else). If they're pushing you to make the bet, it's a bad bet.

24:19 in favour of the pat hand
I miss with: 4xK,Q,J,10 less the one I discard = 15 + 9 pairing cards = 24
Hit with 4x 9,8,7,6,5,4 =24 less your 5 low cards = 19
10 other cards = 53 card deck

Actually on reflection, it's slightly closer on average because the

joker.

Nice problem...

I take it that this means that you can't do the math for the very

I shop at the 99 cent store and leave a $1.00. It's close enough for me.
