Playing at the Bike in LA recently at $2/$4 Hold'em. On three separate
occasions, I was getting ready to be the big blind, when either the button
or the small blind left the table (don't ask me why they just finished
paying for position then didn't play it). From my (admittedly limited)
experience, I expected the button to be dead when the button stood up, and
for there to either be no small blind or two big blinds (me and the former
UTG) when the big blind left.

Instead, on all three occasions (at least two different dealers), I was
instructed to post the small blind, and the former UTG posted big. No
complaints from me, since I effectively missed the big blind, but it struck
me as strange (for exactly that reason).

At least they seemed consistent. Still--did I "get away" with something
here?

Yes. They never let me get away with that when I play.
