Not necessarily.
Soem viruses use the addressbook of the machine they're on to decide
where to go next. The current biggie checks the local newsgroup cache
for addresses to use. So, if soembody read an article you posted to
news, in which you used a real From or ReplyTo, that's enough.

Most can scan email. Some can look at it on the server, some have to
wait until you dl it to your machine, but they can always be set up to
scan before you open the mail, unless you're using Outlook Express with
the Preview Pane enabled (perhaps the single most dangerous thing you
can do).
DO click that Windows Update entry on your Start menu and grab all
Critical updates.
