PokerStars used to do this up until a couple of weeks ago. I loved it
for the same reason you want it - newbie using it as a tool to learn. I
can't fault them for reserving it for paying customers - they got bills
to pay and it's a for-profit company after all. And as the number of
players increase so do their database & IT infrastructure requirements.
It's a massive operation.
As I'm sniffing out and hearing about various online resources, I looked
at http://www.pokerportal.co.uk/. There's a category for software, and a
few very clever programs listed which will track your play (and even
offer advice) for certain services (PS being one of them). This is very
cool - I don't know if they reverse engineered the client/server
protocol or have a contractual agreement with the services or what. It's
one of those "indistiguishable from magic" bits of technology.
Also note that on PS you can also turn on "everything" chat, select the
contents of the chat window with your mouse, right click to get "copy",
and then paste it into something like notepad. It's clumsy but it works,
and the window seems to keep about 3 hands worth of running history.
