View Full Version : Poker Maxims
Maxim number 11 at www.pokermaxims.com says to keep good records. Why??
Why does everyone always say that? It seems like a waste of time that
could be spent playing. I'd like to some good reasons.
I will try to be open minded.
Thanks,
Raul

Well.. there are a lot of reasons to keep records, and you're right, there may
be some good reasons not to. I gotta run right now but I'll get back to Raul.

Think of it as a corporate audit (and poker is a business, at least it
should be treated as such if you're playing to make money.) You're
reviewing your expenses and practices in detail and trying to find places
where you could cut losses, make a little more money, be a little more
efficient, etc.
A lot of information about can be revealed about your strengths and
weaknesses by keeping records (and the boring, mind-numbing (IMO) process
of examining them on a regular basis) and poker is a game of information.
Sure, you'd have more time to play, but why spend two years losing more
(or winning less) than you should when you could spend two months learning
how to play better?
If you're playing for fun you don't need records... but the world class
poker player knows that EVERYTHING (s)he learns (not only about the game
and their opponents, but about themselves) improves their game and may
make the difference between claiming that chamionship bracelet and begging
for change at the bus stop.

I hear ya... It really is painful when you have to write down those bad
losses, but at least you know where you stand. Also, if you are long-term
winning player, it can help you get staked in larger games or tournaments.

So they can play much much higher, much sooner. Like $1000-$2000 games, or
$10000 to $25,000 buy in tournaments.

I have kept poker records for quite a while, but keeping records at craps
last year had talked me out of the game. There have been several times
that I have been stuck 2K at poker and gotten it all back with profit at
the crap table. If I had guessed I would have said that I was a break
even craps player. At the end of last year I was down a little over 7K
playing craps. The point of this story is that keeping records at poker
will take the guess work out of the question - "Am I winning poker player"?

One reason is because poker is a game with many different stakes.
Assume the games get tougher as the stakes get higher.
Say there's a player who makes $10 an hour playing 5-10, $17 an hour
playing 10-20, $22 an hour playing 15-30, $20 an hour playing 20-40.
Clearly he should be playing 15-30, but if he didn't keep records at
each level, how would he know?
Your hourly rate probably has a parabolic relationship to the size of
the game, and you need to know where the parabola starts to turn the
other way.
