It doesn't really have to be a good cause for someone who dies to be
considered a martyr. It only has to be a good cause in the eyes of those
who support that cause, so that they rally behind the ideas that person
represented. For instance, if I were a neo-Nazi, I might think that
Hitler was a martyr and a rallying point for white supremacy. To anyone
who is not a Nazi, Hitler would be the antithesis of a martyr. There are
a lot of wacky people who consider David Koresh or Timothy McVeigh to be
martyrs. If OBL was killed, you'd better believe a lot of people will
view him as a martyr. From my point of view, I consider people like MLK
to qualify as a martyr. Anyway, I think that the main thing is that you
have to be killed to be one.
